A proposal for the community of Woltersdorf in the outskirts of Berlin

Being the creator and the manager of one’s entire living space in a sustainable society

Woltersdorf, rich in natural and built potentials, struggles to become a place to live rather than just being a habitat for people working in the metropolis.

CONCEPT & DESIGN STRATEGIES
To connect the key points both physically and psychologically, with a series of shared policies, in order to be accessible for everybody.
Designing the spaces as open and flexible as possible, providing the community the possibility to change it based on their needs.

SOLUTION
A structure with infrastructural support for housing units; rather than a fixed shape; which can be developed based on the inhabitants use and exigencies.
Inner zone is green and dedicated to civic agriculture, with the possibility to develop in time, and the building frames is placed on the border zone.

GOALS
Flexibility in both shape and time, together with the possibility of infinite functional conversion and absolute elasticity of spatial management, is the embodiment of a shared desire to shape a responsible society which is focused not only on personal needs but also on a positive coexistence.

RESULTS
The future is experimental. It will be one of the “Possible Worlds” which is created by the inhabitants, managed in its entirety and modified when required.

GLOBAL CONSIDERATIONS & SOLUTIONS
Urban Planning faces new challenges all around the world. Cities continue to grow and struggle with the task of becoming more sustainable, absorbing (im)migration, offering spaces to the citizens, & meanwhile remaining attractive places to settle.

Urban Planners should reinvent their vision of the city. We suggest undertaking spontaneous urban interventions starting from human scale.
“RE-DESIGN” is the Key, a new settlement in which people can not only live more freely (spontaneously), but also in harmony with their environment.

WHAT IS NEEDED?
People need to be re-connected to the natural environment. Urban Agriculture plays a key role in the following global challenges: Urbanization & Food Security.

SHAPING THE CITIES TO SHAPE US
Our answer to the instant city and the economic crisis is the spontaneous city.
Our vision is an exchange between design and use.

GUIDELINES OF SPONTANEITY
– Zoom in
– Supervise open developments
– Create collective values
– Be user-oriented

A flexible urban planning by the power of private initiatives, accompanied by a limited number of smart rules to make development possible.
The Simpler, The Better.
